Guidelines For Inflammation Control

  •  Avoid Exacerbating Activities.  Let Pain Be Your Guide

Talk to your therapist about activities, movements, or positions to avoid with your condition.

  • Ice 3-5x Per Day for 15-20 minutes

We recommend crushed ice. A bag of frozen peas or corn works great and can be re-used.
Use caution with Gel Packs.  If you decide to use a Gel Pack make sure to have a layer between the Gel Pack and the skin such as pillow case or light towel.  Frost-bite can occur with Gel Packs but not crushed ice.

  • Ice Cup 3-5x Per Day for 5 minutes

Freeze some paper cups.  Holding the rim of the cup cut the bottom of the cup off with a knife exposing the ice.  Apply the ice directly to the treatment area.  Apply mild pressure as you apply the ice.

  • NSAIDs  (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories)

ADVIL ( Ibuprofen):
Take 2-3 200 mg Tablets 3 x Per Day (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Do not exceed 1800mg a day. This all depends on your age, weight, renal function, and any co-morbid medical conditions you might have. For healthy adults 600 mg three times a day is the maximum. A history of ulcers, bleeding disorders, upset stomach, injury to the kidneys, increased blood pressure may be contraindications to Ibuprophen. Please consult your physician if you have this medical history. Protect your stomach with Prilosec or Zantac or Pepcid and antacids. Take them with food.

-or-

(ALEVE (Naproxen):
1 Tablet (220 mg) 2x Per Day (Breakfast, Dinner)
Aleve tablets contain 220 mg of naproxen. For pain, you should not take more than 440 mg, or 2 tablets, within a 12-hour period.  For joint pain most doctors recommend taking two Aleve in the morning, and two at night right before bedtime. A history of ulcers, bleeding disorders, upset stomach, injury to the kidneys, increased blood pressure may be contraindications to Naproxen. Please consult your physician if you have this medical history. Protect your stomach with Prilosec or Zantac or Pepcid and antacids. Take them with food.

YOU MUST KEEP NSAIDs (ADVIL, ALEVE) IN YOUR SYSTEM FOR OPTIMAL INFLAMMATION CONTROL.  SPOT TAKING THEM WILL ONLY HELP WITH PAIN MODULATION.  TRY TO NOT SKIP DOSES.  A 7 TO 10 DAY REGIME IS RECOMMENDED.  NSAIDs MAY INTERFERE WITH BONE REMODELING.  CONSULT YOUR THERAPIST AND/OR YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE TAKING THEM REGULARLY
